Sharif University of Technology team shines in ICPC World Championships

The Sharif University of Technology team won the West Asia regional championship title in the 49th ICPC International Student Programming Competition.

Sharif University of Technology’s Public Relations Office announced that the 49th International Collegiate Programming Contest (ICPC), held in Azerbaijan from Shahrivar 9th to 14th (August 30th to September 4th), brought together 140 elite teams from across the globe. These formidable teams were meticulously chosen from a pool of over 73,000 students representing 3,424 universities in 103 countries, following a series of highly competitive qualification rounds.

In a remarkable display of intellectual prowess, the Sharif University of Technology team successfully solved 9 out of 12 challenging problems, earning them the 16th position worldwide and securing a place among the coveted top five teams awarded “highest honor.” Their exceptional performance positioned them ahead of distinguished institutions including Cambridge, Berkeley, UCLA, Georgia Tech, CMU, Purdue, EPFL, Duke, Illinois, Texas, Toronto, UBC, Rutgers, Chicago, and ETH in the overall standings.

A particularly noteworthy achievement was the team’s ability to solve one of the contest’s most intricate problems with unparalleled speed, outperforming all other competitors. This extraordinary feat earned them a special recognition for the “First Solve” of that particular problem.

Furthermore, the Sharif University of Technology team was unequivocally recognized as the preeminent force in the West Asia region, clinching the regional championship award with a substantial lead. The second-place team in this region, from Chennai University of India, solved 7 problems, achieving the 60th global rank.

The triumphant Sharif University of Technology team comprised undergraduate students from the Computer Engineering Department: Ali Safari, Alireza Keshavarz, and Amirmohammad Shahrezaei. The team’s successful campaign was expertly mentored by Dr. Hamid Zarrabizadeh.
